![]() “Informational interview” is a fancy term for a simple concept: talking to people about what they do. If you are having difficulty identifying shadowing opportunities, consider setting up some informational interviews. ![]() What alternatives are there? Informational Interviewing Many (but not all) health care shadowing programs have suspended their in-person programs during COVID. For example, ThedaCare (a large healthcare system in Fox Cities) is currently limiting college student shadowing experiences to students who are required to shadow as part of their formal college curriculum, such as nursing school students. However, shadowing policies may vary at this point in time, especially at private or independent practice clinics. For example, there are private/independent veterinary clinics, dental clinics, physical therapy clinics, and other healthcare clinics in the area that are currently allowing shadowing for interested college students who reach out. If you want ideas for pandemic-era shadowing and connecting with health care professionals, this resource is for you! However, if you are in this situation, there are still options for you to connect with professionals in the field! You do not need to miss out on the insights and benefits that shadowing can offer. Unfortunately, many students continue to face shadowing access challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. Shadowing can be valuable in any field and some graduate school programs in health care require you to complete a minimum number of volunteer or shadowing hours to be considered for admission.Shadowing is an excellent way to explore careers in health care and medicine. The process of shadowing involves observing a professional in their daily work environment to experience the real-life routines and challenges of your field of interest. It allows you to explore and determine if it is a good career path for you, and it can enhance your credentials for applying to a professional or graduate program. Gaining experience during your undergraduate career serves two important purposes. How does this experience shape and mature your understanding of the profession?.What is the most surprising thing you learned or observed today?.Most graduate and professional programs in health sciences require a minimum number of hours of shadowing experience. Shadowing helps you understand more about a professional field of interest. It involves following a professional throughout their day, observing the ins-and-outs of the profession as a whole. ![]() I could have tested just the current generation of CPUs, but chose also to include legacy models because most users will keep a dedicated audio computer running for three to five years before upgrading - I hope the chart will give some indication of how the performance has progressed over the last several years, and how newer but lower-spec CPUs compare with older top-of-the-line ones.Īs we’ll see, another important ‘take away’ from this test is that not all CPUs with the same nomenclature are created equal, even if they’re of the same generation and have the same naming system - this is particularly important to bear in mind when moving from a mobile to a desktop setup, or vice versa.įinally, these tests are inevitably a snapshot: it won’t be too many months before a new bigger, badder, faster model comes along, so perhaps we’ll revisit this question when the next generation of chips becomes available. (It’s also worth mentioning that, while better interfaces are available, I have established via group testing that this particular model offers a great performance/price ratio for new users wanting to make music.) For the same reason, all tests were performed in an identical Windows 7 OS installation, and the same DAW software (Reaper) was used: we can therefore be sure that the differences in performance shown on the chart aren’t due to any differences in software. ![]() Some expensive, better-performing interfaces may result in better performances overall, but the important thing is to establish a stable baseline. It’s important to keep other factors as consistent as possible, so I used the same USB audio interface (Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6) for all tests. By restricting the tests to a standard plug-in (Cockos’s ReaXComp multiband compressor, in this case), DAWBench enables you to make meaningful comparisons in performance. DAWBench has been discussed many times in SOS and there’s plenty of information at but, essentially, it loads instances of a plug-in in a DAW, measures the performance and generates a score. This reveals a lot about a CPU’s suitability for audio production: although it won’t give the full picture in regards to ASIO performance, which can vary according to other system factors, this test is designed specifically to ‘stress test’ a computer’s CPU. I spent quite some time comparing a wide range of CPUs commonly used in audio machines, using a standard test, the freely available DAWBench DSP Universal 2014 test. When moving on from a product that’s three, four or perhaps even more years old to a new setup, it’s therefore very difficult to figure out what sort of performance improvement your money will buy - and it’s particularly difficult to establish at what point spending more money takes you past the point of diminishing returns. (See the Intel & AMD box.) This means that when comparing different generations of similarly named chips, the clock speed and core count may appear similar, but the real-world audio performance will vary significantly. Despite the clock speeds not having increased dramatically in recent years, the processor manufacturers have continued to improve their chips in other ways. ![]() The days of being able to identify the best CPU by looking at the headline clock speed are long gone. There are others, not covered here, including the type of storage used and the amount and speed of RAM, but the CPU plays a hugely important part. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is just one factor that influences your computer’s audio performance. So I’ll also explain in these pages a bit more about what makes a good CPU, and the implications of your CPU choice for the rest of the system (in terms of heat, cooling and noise, for example).ĭownload the full resolution chart here CPU Basics The chart makes clear which CPUs offer the best performance, but nothing about cost and certain other important considerations. I included a range of chips from the more cost-conscious to the fastest chips money can buy, and have looked at both mobile and desktop versions, as well as new chips and some that are now three or four years old. Our benchmark tests show you which CPUs offer the best audio performance, whether you’re on a budget or money’s no object.Įvery few years, as resource-hungry software takes advantage of newer, more powerful computers, the same questions arise about the computer that lies at the heart of your studio: do I need to upgrade this machine, or should I replace it entirely? Well, we can more or less safely infer that these loud and perhaps loutish Americans are visiting France and Europe, where civility and consideration for others are highly regarded. In our example, for example, the term “faux pas” is used more or less appropriately because it talks about Americans abroad, visiting other European countries, perhaps including France. I mean, you must take context into consideration when you choose your words. mistakes made in a social setting, when you’re with other fellow human beings.Ī third point to note is that perhaps you should not only avoid committing faux pas, but avoiding using the term in most of your writing also. It refers to social gaffes and blunders, i.e. You may slurp your soup with any type of noise if you like in, say, your own private room, when you are alone, when, I mean, all your family members are outside, when, that is, there’s no chance of you disturbing anyone but your dear slurping self. Those who happened to find one had to pay an arm and a leg for it. Due to lack of mass adoption, they were discontinued in the early 90s and became sought after by diehards. Thus, flare was born.įast forward a few years, and WTB collaborated with Specialized Bicycles to create the RM-2, a wing-shaped, dirt-drop handlebar that became one of the first production bars in this genre. They were also quite narrow, so early visionaries started bending the hooks on road handlebars outward to provide more leverage and stability. They added bigger tires and rode drop bars in the hooks (or drops) because the old road hoods weren’t that comfy or stable. Who came up with these types of bars? It all started back in the 1980s when early mountain bikers began retrofitting and modifying their road bikes to ride off-road. And considering that most people keep their hands in the drops while negotiating steep, loose, off-camber, or more technical surfaces, shallower, flared, and outswept drop extensions offer more control in this position.Ī Brief History of Dirt Drops and Gravel Bars Additional width creates a more natural position for most people (especially mountain bikers) and adds stability and leverage while climbing and descending in the hoods. In short, the consensus is that having wider bars with drops that flare outward (among other tweaks) provides more control compared to bars designed for standard road cycling, which were originally engineered for speed and efficiency. The most convincing reason to upgrade from a traditional road handlebar to a more specialized off-road drop bar is control and stability. We’ve also compiled a full list of gravel bars with complete specs and loads of photos, including some that have been reviewed. In this Gear Index guide, we’ll outline the terms that define these bars, how to differentiate among them, and the relative advantages of each. This style of handlebar is quite useful, and the range of options and variations can be mind boggling. ![]() One such component-and perhaps the one experiencing the most fluctuation and innovation at the moment-are drop handlebars, aka flared drop bars, gravel bars, or dirt-drops. With more and more people using “road” bikes for a variety of off-pavement pursuits, bike parts are quickly evolving to fit those needs. ![]() ![]() This time, Jack’s Smoke Stack location became one of Kansas City’s most popular restaurants, which led to the final twist of the story. ![]() Instead, he focused on providing the best food possible, regardless of the cost.Īll of it worked. Gone were Jack’s cost-cutting practices that sprung from a desire to show that he could succeed on his own. Gone was the traditional barbecue shack, as Jack and Delores opted for a more upscale feel to their restaurants, providing full service and comfort expected from a higher class than barbecue. Gone was the small menu, replaced by an extensive one that included sides made from scratch and nontraditional items such as fish, lamb and shrimp. Doing things Russ’ way hadn’t worked out, so the husband and wife team decided that they would take risks and do things their way. When he returned to Smoke Stack, Jack and his wife, Delores, decided they had learned their lesson, and it was time for a change. Predictably, Hatfield and McCoy’s didn’t last, closing after less than two years. It was just the same food they could get at Smoke Stack with a new name, which wasn’t good enough. In barbecue-crazy Kansas City, both restaurants suffered because there was nothing noteworthy about either place. In an incredible bit of foreshadowing, he called the restaurant Hatfield and McCoy’s, using the same menu that had worked for Smoke Stack. But the story took its first turn in 1974, when Jack Fiorella, the oldest son, became frustrated with working under his father and pushed for a second Smoke Stack location, allowing him to run his own restaurant and emerge from his father’s shadow.īut five years later, the shadow still loomed, so much so that Jack decided to open a second restaurant that would not bear the Smoke Stack name in an effort to distance himself from his father’s success. The origins are similar to Bryant’s and Gates, as Russ Fiorella began Smoke Stack Barbecue in 1957 and had his children work in his modest restaurant, keeping with the family affair theme. Bryant’s got its start in 1946 when the Bryant brothers of Charlie and Arthur went into business together, and Gates came the same year when George Gates started Gates and Sons Bar B Q.īut in the case of Jack Stack, rather than being a family affair, this seems to be more of a case of family gone wrong. ![]() Of the Big Four barbecue restaurants of Kansas City, which include Arthur Bryant’s, Gates, Joe’s Kansas City/ Oklahoma Joe’s and Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue, only Joe’s Kansas City can truly be considered an outsider, having only arrived in Kansas City in the 1990’s and being started by a group of friends rather than one family. The other staple of Kansas City is that legendary barbecue is a longtime family affair. Whether it’s pork, beef, ham, turkey, chicken or sausage, the City of Fountains has always put everything in the smoker and doused it in sauce. Unlike the pork-loving Southeast or brisket-happy Texas, Kansas City has never had one kind of signature meat. In large part because of the variety of meat available, one of the staples of Kansas City barbecue became the willingness to smoke any and every kind of meat available. With all of the meat both coming in and in their own backyard, it only made sense for Kansas City to develop a signature cuisine based around the meats, leading to Kansas City becoming a mecca for barbecue nationwide. Most puppeteers around the country are of the opinion that that the competition from cinema and TV had hit them hard. The puppeteer uses his or her skills to makes the puppet, an inanimate object, talk, sing, dance and behave the way humans do. The craft of making Kathputli, was practiced by a community of performing artists. Whereas the words kath means ‘wood’ and putli means ‘a doll or toy’. Kathputli that means a puppet, made from wood. It is so sad to see that puppeteers are slowly fading away. Puppetry is a real challenge to the imagination of the individual. Puppetry is considered to be one of the oldest forms of storytelling in the country. Each year March 21 is celebrated as World Puppetry Day to recognise puppetry as a global art form. These picture narratives are performed with music and movement that reminds us that puppetry and performers and painters often come from the same groups as puppeteers”.You must have been familiar with puppets and if you’re like most people, you must have probably seen a puppeteer in action and may have even played with a puppet. Buddhist literature mentions charana chitta (mobile paintings) of the punishments of hell, commonly called yama pata (scrolls of the god Yama, ruler of the underworld): even today we find Bengali performers who play hell scenes called yam pot, and contemporary Gujarati panels may show the Lord of Death (Yama) dealing out punishments. References to these picture scrolls can be found from the 2nd century BCE and, for example, a 3rd-century text Bhagavati Sutra relates that the great Jain teacher Mankhali Gosala was the son of a picture showman. Consider similarities in the treatment of eyes in 16th-century Lepakshi temple murals of Andhra Pradesh and the shadow puppets of the region, the patachitras (iconic paintings on walls, cloth, palm leaves, scrolls) and gopalila kundhei puppets of Orissa, and the patas (paintings, painted scrolls) and danger putul nach rod puppets of West Bengal. “Puppet making is routinely related to the visual art tradition of the region. The puppeteers wearing ankle bells dance backstage while their puppets dance on the stage along with drummers and musicians beating their bols (drum syllables), matching the puppeteer’s steps. Since the rhythm and dance are essentially permanent elements in both. These similarities make the puppet play look like a miniature theater performance. There are similarities in the visual style also, may it be the costumes, headgear, jewelry, make-up, even sometimes character-type also matches. Karnataka’s yakshagana and yakshagana gombeyata string puppetry, Kerala’s kathakali and pavakathakali glove puppetry, West Bengal’s jatra and danger putul nach rod puppetry, and Assam’s bhaona and putala nach string puppets are interrelated. There are many parallels between puppetry and traditional dance- drama. Although traditional puppeteers don't share the aesthetic terms used in Natyasastra (‘Book of Drama'' written between 200 B.C.E - 200 C.E). There are scholars who believe that the foundation of regional forms in the local language is very much linked with the Sanskrit drama. The interplay between rasa (sentiment) and bhava (emotional state) along with song, text, rhythm, and movement are elements that connect it with the Sanskrit theater strongly. Sutradhar (the one who holds the string) and Vidushaka (a comic relief) appear taking different forms and names on the opening of the show. The ritual of preparations is very much similar. There are strong connections between the Indian puppetry genre from different regions and traditional actor theater forms. Their worldview along with the moral content is linked with the religion, and these religions could include cults of local divinity such as Hindu Shaivism, Buddhism, Jainism, Vaishnavism, and Islam. The social and economical context of traditional artists, visuals, and aesthetics somehow are also shared within the realm of theaters. The similarity includes the context of stories for the play, the central figure of the narrator or singer, dance, music, and the structure of the performance. But they all share some similarities with each other even when they belong from different regions and are performed in different languages and dialects. In India, there are twenty living traditions of shadow puppetry, string puppetry, rod puppetry, and glove puppetry. |
